Johnson Controls: Bringing Clarity to AI-Powered Building Automation
Facility managers were drowning in AI-generated alerts with no way to distinguish critical issues from noise. The dashboard surfaced everything equally, creating alert fatigue and missed maintenance windows. The ML model was powerful, but its outputs were unusable without human-centered design.
Lead UX Designer and Service Designer. I owned the dashboard redesign and created the service blueprint mapping how alerts flow from AI detection to human action.
Redesigned the alert system around urgency tiers and impact visualization. Created a "what's at stake" framework that shows facility managers the cost of inaction—not just that something needs attention, but why it matters now. Introduced progressive disclosure so users can drill into ML confidence scores without being overwhelmed upfront.
AI outputs are only valuable if humans can act on them. The strategy was to translate machine confidence into human confidence—making the "why" as clear as the "what."

Through a human-centered redesign, I introduced a modular UX framework that unified multiple command systems under one visual language. Using service blueprints and journey mapping, I identified bottlenecks in the operator workflow and optimized key interactions for efficiency and clarity. The final solution delivered a data-rich, real-time command interface that improved situational awareness, reduced task time, and enhanced system adoption rates. A newly developed design system and pattern library ensured consistency across global deployments, transforming a fragmented toolset into a seamless operational ecosystem.
